What should I do if there’s a fire?
In a house- We share advice from the fire service who say if the fire is inside your home you should leave and call 999.
In a flat- If you live in a block of flats or one of our high rises and the fire is not inside your flat, if you are not in danger you should call 999 and stay where you are until the fire service arrive and evacuate you from the building.
Home safety tips
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service have lots of tips on staying safe in your home:
- Test your smoke alarm every week.
- Make a plan so that everyone in your home knows how to escape in the event of fire.
- Never put your washing machine or tumble dryer on before going to bed or leaving your home for any reason. You can register your appliances here and you will be told about any safety recalls or problems with them.
- Close all the doors inside your home before you go to bed and switch off and unplug appliances.
- Keep anything that could catch fire away from the cooker. Use a timer and never leave it unattended.
- Use a maximum of one plug in each socket and never use them if wet.

- Emergency lighting in the communal areas.
- Our staff are in and around your block every week and sort out any fire risks such as items left in corridors or flytipping.
- Fire safety signs in the emergency stairways.
High-rise blocks
- Sprinklers fitted inside every home.
- Smoke alarms fitted to every home.
- Fire breaks fitted in the external wall insulation.
- Emergency lighting in the communal areas and we test it every month.
- Our staff are in and around your block every week and sort out any fire risks such as items left in corridors or flytipping.
- Fire safety signs in the emergency stairways.
- South Wales Fire and Rescue Service regularly visit our three high-rise blocks for training exercises.
